Mission Statement

The Butte College Public Safety Education & Training Center educates and trains students to serve and protect the public in a highly competent and professional manner.

Program Description

The Fire Science (or Technology) Program generates approximately 101 FTE. One full-time instructor is currently budgeted. He is assisted by three associate faculty positions. The total associate faculty workload is slightly less than one full-time instructor load. Program culmination opportunities in this discipline include:

1. AS Degree in Fire Technology (Career/Technical)
2. Certificate of Achievement in Fire Technology (Career/Technical)
3. Certificate of Completion in BASIC 32 (Basic Wildland Firefighting)

All pedagogical caps have been reviewed and are appropriate.

Student Learning/Administrative Unit Outcomes

faculty continue to review SlO's and submit reports and findings with their grade summeries. The faculty use this to continue to improve course delivery to improve SLO outcomes. included are our most recent SLO reflections.

FSC FSC-10 M5006 Bldg Const-Fire Protect M. Haslem SLO Reflection: The SLO project has made me focus more on if my assignments are addressing the course SLO’s. I felt fairly confident that they were but the entire SLO process added another layer of checks and balances. This exercise has made me be more aware of the material I’m delivering and the assessments that my students are taking. As I move forward I will continue to work on tweaking the material given to assure it aligns with course level SLO’s.
FSC FSC-12 M5008 Fund Fire Prevention C. Main We studied the principles for both a company officer and as part of the fire prevention bureau to do fire inspections, know the hazards present with mitigations to prevent fires or injuries and the basic components of suppression systems, alarm systems, exiting requirements, public education and knowledge needed to work as a fire prevention officer. We did two individual projects: one to present a fire prevention safety brochure to the public and a fire department preplan to learn hazards, safety systems in place and how to best manage a fire, should on occur in a specified business in the community. All objectives were met through the projects and/or quizzes and written exams.
FSC FSC-14 M5010 Fire Protect Equip-Syst M. Haslem SLO Reflection: After looking at our current text I realized that course delivery material needs to be updated to reflect the changes in fire protection that are occurring. I felt fairly confident that they were but the entire SLO process added another layer of checks and balances. This exercise has made me be more aware of the material I’m delivering and the assessments that my students are taking. As I move forward I will continue to work on tweaking the material given to assure it aligns with course level SLO’s.

FSC FSC-18 O7387 Basic Wildlnd Firefight C. Main FSC-18 S.L.O.  OBJECTIVES We studied the ICS and NIMS and run some scenarios to ensure students understood the systems. Through presentations we learned all of the objectives presented and evaluated the learning through quizzes and two exams. We also did two individual projects requiring research to give the students a chance to demonstrate their understanding of many aspects of what we have previously learned. They also filled out a job application and received feedback and discussion on how to interview for jobs to be successful in their career goals.
FSC FSC-2 M5000 Intro To Fire Science I. Liebenberg This was my first semester teaching FSC-2. I feel like I was able to add a lot of first-hand experience to the classroom setting. I will try to incorporate more class participation for the future semesters.
FSC FSC-2 M5002 Intro To Fire Science M. FSC FSC-4 M5003 Fire Behav-Combustion M. Haslem SLO Reflection: This is my second semester teaching this class with my own created material. The SLO project has made me focus more on if my assignments are addressing the course SLO’s. I felt fairly confident that they were but the entire SLO process added another layer of checks and balances. This exercise has made me be more aware of the material I’m delivering and the assessments that my students are taking. The fire technology program student success numbers are positive. the college success goal is 75% and the program is over 80%. The colleges goal for retention is 73% and the program has retention number over 90%. Degrees, and certificate number are steady. Many students that get the certificates find employment before completing the degree and this is something we can work on improving is emphasizing the importance of the degree for employment promotion. included is the department data.

Standards/Goals for Student Achievement (All Other Departments)

The Fire Technology degree does not have a direct transfer degree to a university. most of our students transfer into Public Administration, business, or emergency management. So many students don't realize that this is the transfer path. We are utilizing class time to notify students of their transfer options and encouraging them to pursue higher education for better employment mobility and advancement.

Strategic Direction

With the colleges major emphasis on Guided Pathways, we are working on helping students find the fastest end to their goal as well as other options they may take within the field. We meet regularly with the EMS department because our two departments are so intertwined.

Program Review

Recommendations to be implemented: 1) develop online versions of our face to face FSC course offerings.

Department Goals

Future Development Strategies

Strategy 1 - Faculty Resource Enhancement

It will be a priority in the near future to identify and employ additional part-time faculty, but ultimately to pursue the addition of a second full-time faculty member for this popular major.

Initiatives
  • Supporting Student, Faculty and Staff Success
  • Maximizing Resources to Support Student Learning

Supporting Rationale

This entire degree program is operated, essentially, on the back of one full-time faculty member. Although there is limited use of part-time faculty, the nature of the fire service is such that their availability cannot be depended upon.

Strategy 2 - Department Administrative Support

Create new half time (.5) Secretary I position to provide administrative/clerical support to the PSETC.

Initiatives
  • Supporting Student, Faculty and Staff Success
  • Maximizing Resources to Support Student Learning

Supporting Rationale

The workload in the PSETC has reached a point where the 2 full time secretaries are each responsible for three academies a year + an academic discipline (either AJ or FSC), and the program Assistant is perpetually immersed in processing employment applications, managing the budget and paying bills for all of the Department's programs. As such, the Department has come to depend on Student Assistants to provide front counter/receptionist coverage in the PSETC office. As the Department is very fast paced, and there are a myriad of confidential records related to academy students that must be handled, processed and filed it has been challenging to find students who can keep up with the pace. The addition of this lower level clerical position would insure that there is receptionist/counter coverage during peak hours and reduce the challenge of trying to find students who can keep up with the pace of the office.

1 PSETC - Fire Technology Personnel $0.00 $37,000.00
.5 Secretary I As noted in Future Development Strategy #4, the workload of current admin support staff in PSETC limits the ability to provide front counter/receptionist coverage for the very busy PSETC office. The intensity and load of activity makes it especially challenging to find student assistants who are able to keep up. The addition of this position would allow for solid, reliable coverage in the office during peak activity hours.
  • Addressing Program Review Recommendations
  • Meeting student achievement goals (Vision for Success Goals)
  • Enrollment growth and improvement in student outcomes and student equity
  • Implementing Guided Pathways: a. Strategic Scheduling; b. Hobsons Starfish

Full-Time Faculty This program is currently ran with one full-Time faculty member and 3 associate faculty. However, we are unable to offer required classes each semester because of lack of staffing. Our associate faculty are working firefighters and their availability is limited. an additional full-time faculty member would help fill the void and make for a smoother transition when our current full-time instructor retires.
